My Additions to the 21 Ways You Should Take Advantage of Your Twenties

Recently I tweeted a great post from Thought Catalog that counted the 21 Ways You Should Take Advantage of Your Twenties. You can find it here. I think it’s a pretty great list, but I think there are a few more things to remember:

1. That great career you’re shooting for? To pay for cash bars, tailored khakis that won’t fall apart after two washes and vacations? That doesn’t just happen because you turned thirty. Use your twenties, especially you’re early twenties, to connect with people who are doing something you admire, that you’d like to do. People are always willing to help students and are always open to flattery so use that to your advantage to help you get where you want to go. Then, in your late twenties, pass that on. When a student from your alma mater sends you an email gushing about your cool job, take them out to coffee and let them ask you a bunch of questions.

2. Yes, make new friends but keep in contact with the good ones from college (and high school!) Use Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, your own blog, email, the phone or even (gasp!) real mail to keep up with your friends that got you through the hard times–and the best times–in college. With all these new social networks, you really have no excuse.

3. Get cultured. Use your student discout to go cool places that cost a fortune without an ID. Do things, read stuff, go places!

4. If you are still working toward your dream career, skip being a “barista.” Work in a bar. I promise you will make more money, have more fun, learn how to properly act in public settings and you may even get some great networking in. You will learn valuable customer service skills, and every job is a customer service job these days. Plus, you’ll still get the feeling of being out with your friends and being social but instead of being broke you’ll be making money, you’ll learn impressive drinks to order in any circumstance and you won’t constantly be the shameful, sloppy drunk friend/cousin/sibling.

ASA Being Upheld by the Supreme Court
“The first draft of everything is shit.” Hemingway said that and I do believe he knows a thing or two about drafts. No, ASA is not perfect, it needs a lot of tweaks and trials by fire but I do believe that this is a good step for the country.

New York City
Some of you know that I went to New York this month for my first real trip there. I’d visited previously but essentially only saw old Yankee Stadium and Times Square. I went for some interviews which went well enough and to experience a bit of the city. I (kind of) hate to admit that I loved it but I did, indeed, love it; it was a fantastic trip (PS- there are definitely still things about NYC that I think are second best). I could definitely move here for some adventures.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Technically, I loved this at the very end of May but it was too good not to mention it. Fantastic birthday gift!

GIRLS.
Again, technically my love affair with this show began at its inception but in June I had the time to really commit to becoming a stalker. If you missed season 1, you missed out big time!

It’s Time by Imagine Dragons
I don’t know if I was feeling particularly fiesty for some reason or another but this song and Katy Perry’s Part of Me were my jams this month. The general “this is who I am and there’s a snowball’s shot in hell that I’m going to change” thing really did it for me.
